C.P. Radhakrishnan elected as India's 15th vice president, defeating opposition's Reddy

C.P. Radhakrishnan, the nominee of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been elected as the 15th vice president of India. The current governor of Maharashtra secured a decisive victory with 452 votes against the opposition's candidate, former supreme court judge B. Sudershan Reddy.

The election, which took place on september 9, 2025, saw members of both houses of Parliament cast their votes. Prime minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote in the polling process. The election was necessitated by the unexpected resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar in july due to health concerns.

Voting was conducted via a secret ballot, which allows members of Parliament, including nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, to vote according to their conscience without being bound by party whips. Given the NDA's majority in Parliament, Radhakrishnan was widely considered the frontrunner.

Radhakrishnan, a senior leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was nominated by the NDA for the country's second-highest constitutional office. His opponent, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, was the consensus candidate for the opposition's Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc.

Following the victory, prime minister Modi expressed his confidence in the vice president-elect. In an earlier statement, he had noted that Radhakrishnan would be an "inspiring vice president."

As vice president, Radhakrishnan will also serve as the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. The role is also second in the line of succession to the presidency, with the vice president tasked to act as president in the event of a vacancy due to death, resignation, or impeachment.
