Two detainees killed in targeted shooting at Dallas ICE facility; suspect dead

A deadly shooting at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on the morning of September 24, 2025, left two detainees dead and another in critical condition. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation, treating the incident as an "act of targeted violence."

The attack unfolded when a gunman, positioned on a nearby rooftop or in an adjacent building, opened fire on the facility's sally port area. Following the shooting, the suspect was found deceased from what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

FBI Special Agent Joe Rothrock confirmed the shooting was being investigated as a targeted attack. The motive appears linked to an anti-immigration enforcement ideology, as officials reported that unused ammunition casings found near the suspect were inscribed with "anti-ICE" messages.

The Department of Homeland Security verified that all three individuals shot were detainees within the facility. No ICE agents or other law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. While authorities have not officially released the suspect's name, media outlets have identified him as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.

The shooting has sparked a wave of political reaction. Vice President JD Vance and Senator Ted Cruz both condemned the violence and the rhetoric they say fuels such attacks on law enforcement. In contrast, Democratic Representative Marc Veasey voiced concern that officials might be downplaying the fact that the victims were migrants.

ICE's Dallas Field Office Acting Director, Joshua Johnson, released a statement calling for an end to "dangerous rhetoric that can lead to such acts of violence." This incident follows a series of other recent attacks on immigration and law enforcement facilities in Texas, including shootings in Alvarado and McAllen. Acknowledging a rise in such threats, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the department has seen an increase in violent acts targeting its facilities.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, authorities temporarily closed parts of the I-35E highway to secure the scene and conduct their investigation, which remains ongoing.
